February 10, 2010—Caterpillar Inc. is providing heavy equipment and trained operators to its Haitian dealer HayTrac in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake.

“Given our past experience with natural disasters in other parts of the world, we know our dealers on the ground in the region are typically among the first to respond,” said Caterpillar spokeswoman Bridget Young. “Caterpillar offers assistance based on the assessment of their dealers on the ground.”

HayTrac has been supporting recovery efforts, since the earthquake hit the Caribbean country.

The Salvation Army continues to be a beacon of hope for individuals and families whose lives were devastated by the earthquake. While the Haiti Relief Team maintains support and provides assistance for 20,000 individuals in an area adjacent to their compound in Port-au-Prince, they have reached out to other areas of the country – diligently meeting needs at the point of need at the time of need. There has been a steady, marked improvement in the overall situation in the four weeks since the earthquake.

    Emergency Response in Haiti

The American Refugee Committee’s emergency response team is on the ground in Haiti, bringing relief to some of the millions who were devastated by last week’s earthquake. We’ve flown in experts from all over the world in health, sanitation, water, protection, security, and logistics. They are working around the clock to reach as many people as possible, as quickly and effectively as possible. We are working in Port-au-Prince, Fond Parisien, to the east, and in Jimani, just across the Dominican Republic border.

How the Red Cross is Helping
In an operation that has involved more emergency response teams than any other single-country disaster in global Red Cross history, the American Red Cross has so far spent or committed nearly $78 million to meet the most urgent needs of earthquake survivors in Haiti.

The American Red Cross is currently focusing on three areas through its emergency responders and partners:

    1. Sending food to those in need, including 3 million pre-packaged meals and funding for World Food Program efforts that will enable them to feed up to 1 million people for a month.
